It’s what professional development
should be…it has opened my eyes to
a myriad of possibilities for teaching
and learning about Shakespeare. -Teacher,
Norman Thomas High School
For the seventh year, BAM is offering
Shakespeare Teaches Teachers, an intensive
series of workshops focused on providing
a heightened understanding of Shakespeare,
and showing how to approach his work
in the high school classroom. The course
is led by a university professor in
conjunction with BAM teaching artists
and features guest artists, educators,
and scholars. Participation will include
attendance at a performance of a Shakespeare
play at BAM to be announced in the
fall.
During the semester, participants examine
Shakespeare’s work through performance
activities, historical context, textual
analysis, and contemporary relevance,
and contribute toward the creation of
a Shakespeare curriculum for the high
school classroom.
This program, including curriculum materials,
texts, and performance tickets, is offered
free of charge to participants. Participation
requires complete attendance and completion
of all reading and curriculum assignments.
Teachers may receive New Teacher Credit
or one D-credit through the Department
of Education, applicable to the first
salary differential. Course size is limited.
Teachers are also encouraged to apply
for Shakespeare Teaches Students.

Shakespeare Teaches Students is a companion
in-school program to the Shakespeare
Teaches Teachers program. In this eight-week
residency with a BAM teaching artist
who participates in Shakespeare Teaches
Teachers, students will learn about Shakespeare’s
work by performing it. The BAM teaching
artists are accomplished actors and directors
with years of experience in performing
Shakespeare’s work. They will work
with you and your students to bring Shakespeare’s
language to life in the classroom through
an exploration of historical context,
character and action. Students receive
a copy of the play and a ticket to a
student matinee performance of a Shakespeare
play at BAM to be announced in the fall.
Teachers are encouraged to participate
in the professional development program
Shakespeare Teaches Teachers, which is
offered simultaneously with the student
residency program.
