DESCRIPTION
With a single lament, Enrique Morente moves mountains. From
the moment he steps onstage, acknowledges his musicians, and
assumes his opening stance, he has the audience in his thrall.
A flamenco singer of the first rank, Morente is at once authoritative
and seductive as he telegraphs the form's pathos, yearning,
and eroticism.
In Omega, a flamenco music concert based on his eponymous
album, Morente (backed by five outstanding flamenco musicians
and the rock group Lagartija Nick) pays tribute to the turbulent
surrealism of Federico García Lorca's Poeta en Nueva
York, the Spanish poet's outraged response to Depression-era
New York, and to songwriter Leonard Cohen's words and music,
whose own incendiary takes on our city drew inspiration from
the passions inherent in both Lorca and flamenco.
The result is a cross-cultural triumph. Classical flamenco guitar,
bass, and percussion, dazzling, tough-minded lyrics, and cutting-edge
rock come together to create an irresistible and uniquely original
fusion of sounds and sensibilities.
