in American modern dance, an art form that supposedly flourishes
best in New York, is Ohio's very own Dayton Contemporary Dance

DESCRIPTION
One hundred years ago, Orville and Wilbur Wright designed, built,
and actually flew the first controlled, powered flight to go
beyond the glorified kites that had been sent aloft during the
previous century. Their plane had controls that allowed the
airborne craft to tilt up, down, and shift from side to side,
a wondrous development that made it possible to fly from one
place to another.
Who better to celebrate the glory of flight than a dancer? On
this, the centennial of the Wright Brothers' maiden flight,
the internationally acclaimed Dayton Contemporary Dance Company
presents the New York premiere of The Flight Project,
two programs of new works by Bill T. Jones, Bebe Miller, Dwight
Rhoden, Warren Spears, Doug Varone, and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar,
six choreographers with distinctly original methods of getting
from here to there.
Their dances, culturally astute explorations of the myriad ramifications
of invention and flight on our world today, are performed by
one of America's premier dance troupes. Since its founding in
1968 by the late Jeraldyne Blunden, DCDC not only has amassed
the world's largest repertory of works by African-American choreographers,
it has cultivated a roster of magnificent dancers capable of
navigating a huge range of styles, no matter how complex the
flight patterns.
