"Susan Marshall is at her
best in the world of fantasy and ambiguity, a world of few answers
and endless possibilities, best expressed with a glance and
a touch."

DESCRIPTION
Known for rippling movement phrases that radiate an intriguing
mix of quietude and volatility, Susan Marshall returns to BAM
with two pure-dance works that both extend and depart from earlier
pieces like the seminal The Most Dangerous Room in the House
(1998 Next Wave), and Les Enfants Terribles, an opera
made in collaboration with Philip Glass (1996 Next Wave).
Sleeping Beauty, a metaphorically rich twist on the
beloved fairytale, reflects the choreographer's pitch-perfect
poetic impulses. Marshall's modern-day heroine is no passive
Beauty awaiting Prince Charming's kiss, but a figure with unique
volition whose dream world defies her would-be rescuers and
reveals a consciousness of another order. Beauty's separate
otherness is portrayed through movements that contrast with
and differ from those outside her spellbound world. In this
violent and tender work, Marshall explores the often-tenuous
lines between dreams and reality, sorrow and joy, and chaos
and calm through an eloquent synthesis of formal dance elements
and everyday actions and gestures.
Other Stories, an emotionally potent exploration of
movement's inherent communicative power, presents a dazzling
panorama of physical encounters, each a succinct, often poignant
take on the multiple forces that define, undercut, and enhance
our complicated lives.
