"Is it Dance?
Theater? Music? More than any of these things, The Sound
of Ocean is a remarkable universal performance, probing
the human condition."

DESCRIPTION
U Theatre, one of Taiwan's most celebrated troupes, makes its
BAM debut with The Sound of Ocean, a rhythmically propelled,
intensely physical exploration of water's cyclical journey from
mere drop to stream to river and, ultimately, to the sea. For
100 seamless minutes, the performers—all supremely athletic-move
effortlessly from stately tai chi-like movement, meditation,
and Buddhist-inspired singing and chanting to virtuosic playing
of temple bells, gongs, cymbals, precisely tuned metal bowls,
and skinned drums of various sizes.
It's an event marked by a powerful sense of ritual and spirituality.
Five distinct yet beautifully interwoven sections evoke the
sounds and sensations of water, its elemental cool surges, gentle
ebbs, and insistent rat-a-tat-tats. The instruments themselves,
some enhanced by large driftwood structures, create a striking
visual as well as sonic landscape. At once hypnotic and electrifying,
The Sound of Ocean expresses the ongoing search for
an artistic form that captures the essence, the preciousness,
of life.
Major support is provided by the Council of Cultural Affairs,
Taiwan.
