DESCRIPTION
What does it mean to be a New Yorker? If you're Bang on a Can's
ceaselessly inventive composer/founders Michael Gordon, David
Lang, and Julia Wolfe, it means inhabiting a city of infinite
possibilities, where artistic ideas proliferate and collide,
gathering strength from each and every collision. It means The
New Yorkers, an evening of visceral, sensuous, and electric
music by Gordon, Lang and Wolfe, an evening packed with surprising
collaborations and featuring a host of striking visuals by artists
from down the block and around the corner.
The New Yorkers means vintage film footage of old New York by
Bill Morrison (who forged his groundbreaking Decasia
from bits of decomposing archival film stock) and texts by Lou
Reed. It means projections by Laurie Olinder, comic strips by
Ben Katchor, a landmark 70s video by William Wegman, and a brand
new one by white-hot artist Doug Aitken.
It means performances by some of NYC's most innovative musicians
and ensembles—the heart-stopping virtuosity of the Bang
on a Can All-Stars, cabaret star Theo Bleckmann, the Michael
Gordon Band, and Ethel, the most talked about string quartet
in town.
Given all of this, it's entirely fitting that Barry Edelstein's
seamless staging of The New Yorkers celebrates the power of
the city's collective unconscious. After all, we are who we
are because of where we are. That's what it means to be a New
Yorker.
