In Merce Cunningham's own words, "there have been four events that have led to large discoveries in my work." This panel discussion will examine the Merce Cunningham Dance Company through the prism of these ideas: (1) the separation of music and dance as influenced by John Cage; (2) the use of chance operations in choreography; (3) the possibilities of film and video; and (4) experimentation with computer technology. Joseph V. Melillo, BAM's
executive producer, will moderate a
panel of artistic collaborators, critics, historians, and dancers, who will lead
the audience in discussion
about the past and present development
of the Cunningham legacy. Panelists include: Merce Cunningham, Carolyn Brown
(original company
member 1953-73), Laura Kuhn (Executive
Director, John Cage Trust), Thecla Schiphorst (Lifeforms software consultant),
and David Vaughan
(Cunningham archivist and author of
Merce Cunningham: Fifty Years).
