Sex, Lies and Decadent Ditties: 3 Centuries of Bawdy Songs with Midge Woolsey
New York WQXR radio and PBS Channel 13/WNET television personality Midge Woolsey
returns to BAMcafé Live with pianist/songwriter Joe Kerr for an evening
of titillating tunes by wanton troubadours past and present. Accompanied by guitarist
Matt Munisteri and bassist Pat O’Leary, they’ll
traverse through well-worn, raunchy tavern classics in addition to original compositions
in what they’ve termed, “cozy swing, wicked words.” WQXR midday
host Jeff Spurgeon makes a special guest appearance in what promises to be a
night of musical wickedness. |

Russian Cabaret Party: Barbez
Barbez lead singer Ksenia Vidyaykina-Gest is a striking,
Slavic ice goddess who dances across the stage in spectacular
marionette–like movements while emanating low, sultry
sounds. The band, dressed like gypsies and 1940s gangsters,
play an array of musical hybrids—French musette, punk
rock, tango, Klezmer, and Russian Folk—in a beautiful,
haunting show of post-cabaret torch songs. |

Brazilian Party: Forro In The Dark
The members of Forro in the Dark bring raw Northeastern Brazilian Dance music
full of hard, driving rhythms
commonly known as baião or forro. The relentless rhythms are built around
a trio of accordion, triangle and zabumba—a small bass drum with a huge
sound. This combination creates beautiful, distinctly Brazilian melodies for
hardworking souls who gather at night for a "forro" to dance their
troubles away. Composed of Rob Curto on accordion, Mauro Refosco on zabumba,
and Jorginho Amorim on triangle, along with guitarist Smokey Hormel and vocalist
Ana Fonteles, Forro In The Dark bring a contagious sense of joy to the room whenever
they play these great Gonzaga songs. |

Slavic Soul Party
Slavic Soul Party is downtown’s answer to Balkan dance music: equal parts
funk, free-form jazz, and old school exuberance. Inspired by traditional ensembles
from the Macedonian region & beyond, these New York improvisers, featuring
composer and vibraphonist Matt Moran, create a new sound to make your heart ache
and your feet move. |

Jahpan
Jahpan is one of New York City’s hottest authentic steel drum band ensembles,
with musicians hailing from Trinidad and Tobago—the country to which we
owe the honor of the creation of steel drums, or “pans”. Crafting
Caribbean rhythms with hints of calypso, soca, and reggae, Jahpan brings an internationally
known, award-winning steel drum orchestra to BAMcafé Live. |

Jewish-Latin Hip-Hop: Hip Hop Hoodíos
"Hip Hop Hoodíos are an empowering fusion of New York urban cultures”—New
York Newsday
Comprised entirely of bilingual musicians from Jewish/Latino backgrounds, the
members of Hip Hop Hoodíos (“hoodío” is a twist on
the word “judio”, Spanish for “Jew”) are linked by a
common love of Latin alternative rock and rap “en Español”,
out to change the notions and preconceptions of Latin music entirely. They have
been deemed the Jewish respuesta to the Beastie Boys and Tenacious D: one part
Latin alternative (a la Café Tacuba, Puya, Aterciopelados) and a hefty
chunk of ego and bravado. |

Wunmi
Underground dance music icon Wunmi graces BAMcafé Live for two nights
of spiritual soul grooving. Loved the world over by denizens of clubs and aficionados
of soul music in its purest form, Wunmi will set the dance floor ablaze these
two nights with an electrifying performance of song and dance. First noticed
as a Soul II Soul dancer showing the world the moves of a new soul vibe, Wunmi
went on to alight the London scene with an unmatched vibrancy. Recent work with
the Red Hot + Riot tribute to Fela album (on the track “Zombie”)
and work with DJ/producer King Britt on his Oba Funke album (along with Zapp
Mama) has simply cemented Wumni’s status as reigning underground Queen
of dance and world beat music. For those who take their music and dancing seriously
these are nights not to be missed. |
