In Memoriam: John Schlesinger
BAM presents three films that pay tribute to the British master
of realism.
Billy Liar (1963) 98min
Tue, Nov 4 at 4:30, 6:50, 9:10pm
Directed by John Schlesinger
With Tom Courtenay, Julie Christie
One of Schlesinger’s first films and a seminal work of
the Brit New Wave, Billy Liar is an ode to working stiffs,
as Courtenay escapes from the drudgery of his job into a world
of fantasy (which includes swinging London girl Christie!)
Darling (1965) 122min
Tue, Nov 11 at 4:30, 6:50, 9:10pm
Directed by John Schlesinger
With Julie Christie, Dirk Bogarde, Laurence Harvey
Darling stars Julie Christie (in her Oscar-winning role) as
a lower-class girl who sleeps her way to the top of the London
scene. Bitingly acerbic, but full of flash and charm, Darling
remains one of the most influential films of the 60s.
Far From the Madding Crowd (1967) 169min
Tue, Nov 25 at 4:30, 8pm
Directed by John Schlesinger
With Julie Christie, Terence Stamp, Peter Finch
Completing Schlesinger’s trilogy with Julie Christie
is this adaptation of a Thomas Hardy novel about the beautiful
Bathsheba Everdene, and her effect on the three men who love
her. Schlesinger’s command of the period is aided by
Nicolas Roeg’s sumptuous cinematography.
