Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is
America's oldest, continuously operating performing arts center.
The Academy opened its doors on Montague Street in Brooklyn
Heights in 1861. After the original site was destroyed by fire,
BAM moved to its present location in Fort Greene in 1907. Throughout
its more than 140-year history, BAM has brought the most exceptional
artists from America and from around the world to its stages
in Brooklyn-from Marian Anderson to Laurie Anderson, Sarah Bernhardt
to Emily Watson, Rudolph Nureyev to Pina Bausch, Honi Coles
to Chuck Davis, and Enrico Caruso to Dawn Upshaw.
With a focus on international performing
and cinema arts as well as local community concerns, BAM is
in the forefront of American urban arts centers. BAM regularly
presents wide-ranging programs in all disciplines that are reflective
of American and global culture. Its facilities consist of the
2,100-seat BAM Howard Gilman Opera House; the 900-seat BAM Harvey
Theater; the four-screen BAM Rose Cinemas; and the BAMcafé,
a flexible public space offering free music and spoken word
programs. Through these venues, BAM has become a destination
for audiences from the neighborhood, from the greater metropolitan
area, and from overseas.
Maintaining BAM's 365-day-per-year
presentation schedule is a costly undertaking, and admissions
only cover a fraction of operating costs. We can only succeed
in our mission through the help of numerous friends and institutional
supporters. We hope that you will take the opportunity to explore
the various avenues to becoming involved. BAM offers individual
giving programs including the Friends of BAM, BAM Cinema Club,
and Next Society, while institutional supporters can become
involved as corporate sponsors or foundation underwriters. Please
join us by becoming a member of the BAMfamily; we would greatly
appreciate your support.
